The Box of Lanzo
By Sami Mermer
November 24, 2006 @ 7pm
at The Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts
Local Filmmaker, Sami Mermer fled Turkey for North America seeking a
better place to live, but instead became a victim of post 9/11 racial
profiling and came under suspicion.
His film in-the-making is not only a poetic reflection of his own
plight as a stateless person, but is also a strong social commentary
on the people that he sees from his window of his second-story
apartment in Grand Rapids Michigan, the homeless.
For two years Sami has built relationships with these fellow displaced
people and is still struggling today to make ends meet and complete
his film.
The film screening will be followed by a short reception with the
director as well as a famous local artist's mega event held at UICA.
Proceeds from both events will go towards the finalization and
distribution the film.
