New Issue of Solace Magazine

There is an image of me - not of mine - but of me - and some amazingly gifted friends of mine (we were working on a film together), by Photographer Mitch Ranger, in the new issue of Solace Magazine. If you get a chance to browse through a copy check it out. Thank you to Mitch and to Sally and Gwen at Plenty Creative. The image is part of an article on the future of film in Grand Rapids. I was working as Wardrobe Supervisor on a recent film shot in Grand Rapids and Mitch and the Plenty Creative team stopped by to shoot images for the magazine. Thanks guys! The images are amazing. Like I said earlier- if you have a chance check it out! -and check out the links above to see more of their work!

Memory... 3/28/07 and the snowdrops are blooming once again.

She quietly opened the door and made her way down the steps to the garden to view the first snowdrops of spring -while he was out running an errand. Each step a struggle... she moved slowly but with certainty. Upon his return he found her in the garden - a world away from the chair in the den that had become her home. They savored the moment - wondering if, wishing it not so - but both secretly knowing, this would be her last visit.

I will remember her every spring when the snowdrops bloom. I will remember her strength and dignity. I will remember her laughter despite the pain. I will remember the feel of her soft cheek against mine. She is finally at peace. She taught me more than she will ever know.

.....

Otherwise

Jane Kenyon

I got out of bed
on two strong legs.
It might have been
otherwise. I ate
cereal, sweet
milk, ripe, flawless
peach. It might
have been otherwise.
I took the dog uphill
to the birch wood.
All morning I did
the work I love.

At noon I lay down
with my mate. It might
have been otherwise.
We ate dinner together
at a table with silver
candlesticks. It might
have been otherwise.
I slept in a bed
in a room with paintings
on the walls, and
planned another day
just like this day.
But one day, I know,
it will be otherwise.

Shot two amazing weddings in January and then went straight into working on a film. No time to breathe let alone blog. Here are some images from the film - not taken by me but by the Press. I was working with Sabra Temple on wardrobe for the film putting in 12 to 18 hours a day! It is good to be back. I am catching up on sleep and getting back into the swing of things again. Will post more soon. Tim and Sam are happy to have me home again - Dylan is off to LA, he flew out of Chicago this morning! Life is good.

Happy New Year!!!

12.09.2008

To have a tree or not to have a tree -this is the question. Every year it's a struggle. Cutting down a live tree - thus shortening it's time here on earth and it's contribution to the beauty and wellness of the environment is not on my list of favorite things to do. Then there is the real issue - the gradual death, dropping of needles, and future disposal of said tree... it all makes me crazy. Needless to say I am not fond of the artificial tree - not a fan of fake - unless it is somehow over-the-top, like a really cool vintage silver or white tree (which we do not own - it might make everything oh so easy, but most likely not, as I am really good at over thinking everything -always). And then there is the struggle with the commercialization of Christmas, although I must admit that I am a fan of giving and receiving presents and I like Christmas cards.
It
usually comes round to the light vs. the darkness of winter and it's pull on my soul. Those little lights on the tree are just too beautiful! Twinkling Christmas lights are a midwinter pick-me-up representing the light we can be for each other and the world and the gift given so long ago. So once again... as always, the light will win. There will be a symbol of the season in our home somewhere, in some way. It is never traditional but always beautiful, covered with large white origami stars that I made with my girlfriend Susan and the boys long, long, ago on a dark winter afternoon, and it is always filled with those wonderful little white sparkling beacons of hope.
I guess it's time for long walk in the woods or a rummage round an old factory building in the neighborhood to seek out the fallen branch that will carry the little white lights of life and hope this year.
Peace -Sandi

Seniors 2008

This year I have been getting lots of requests to shoot Seniors - I enjoy senior shoots and am encouraged by the young people I have met this year. What a great group... smart, kind, articulate, creative, well mannered, humble. The future looks bright - they have their heads on straight. My goal is to keep locations diverse, try fun angles along with traditional poses, and to listen to and implement their ideas -
to give each group of shots a unique voice. It has been an honor! I will be posting a few of the images, as time allows, on my people blog. My website is still in the works.... Click on the link here or in the sidebar for Urban Space People to see more and to check in for updates. Thanks -Sandi

Playing catch up! My internet was down for a little while and it made me realize just how much we rely on it to communicate... kind of scary - but what a great tool! Everything is up and running again and I am playing catch up. I have been blessed to work with many great clients as of late. Wojtek and I have been having fun shooting weddings and the Seniors I have shot this year have been amazing. What an impressive group of young people. Life has been busy but good. Tim took a week off to paint the house and it was sunny and warm every day! Yay. The house is done. Monday morning the weather turned cold and rainy. Hope you are all well out there in blog land. I will try to find more time to keep up with blogging. A special thanks to Aaron Smith who was just here, taking a little time from his busy schedule, to help me with the computer. You Rock! Yay. Thanks Aaron!

I think it may have been the last really warm and sunny day here. This shot was taken inside the 'getting ready tent'. This little guy was smiles all day - caught him in a more serious moment here. It was an honor to be a part of this families big day! Congratulations!!

a plug for some amazing bags!

teamwork -
These guys make one sweeeeet bag. Ok many sweet bags. Click on the image to link the the website. The site itself is pretty amazing. Oh, and Nick is wearing one of Tim's hats in each photo on the main page.... kinda fun. But seriously check out their work. We visited their studio and were blown away - they are seriously good at what they do! The bags rock... they are made of sails - yes sails from sail boats - see the website for more info - I can't wait to get one of my own.

Info on Tim's hats...

... quite a few of you have emailed me or sent me messages on flickr to get contact information for Tim... to get information on his hats - so here is his contact info. To contact him via email - timgunnett@yahoo.com - please write "hats" in the subject line. Thanks - his hats have been quite a hit... thanks for asking about them. For those of you that already own one... email him a picture of yourself in it and he will post it on his blog. We hope to have a website up soon with an area for "hat sighting photos".

Computer Down... for the count

My computer is toast - hard drive is fine... go figure. Will be buying a new comp - hopefully - in the next week or so. This has all been such a bummer! It was only 3 years old and our Apple Care expired in April - guess that's how the cookie crumbles. On the positive side - it is amazing that my hard drive is ok!!!! Yay> and double Yay! I will be using it as an external for now... No matter what people say about the excitement of getting everything updated... and brand spanking new... it will be a little while before I will be smiling about it. Would love any suggestions... from you other Mac users out there... if you had to start all over what would be on your wish-list?

for those of you that I sent the update link to... please click on the Urban Space Banner at the top to view the blog... thanks... Sandi

Weddings by photographers Wojtek Dabrowski and Sandi Gunnett

Thanks
Hope you are having a great summer.
Sandi Gunnett and Wojtek Dabrowski

Shooting a wedding is a huge commitment... I have always admired wedding photographers... Wojtek and I both enjoy shooting weddings but found it a bit overwhelming to do alone... by teaming up we cut the work and the stress in half... by each doing what we do best - for our clients. We are excited to be able to offer wedding coverage but are limiting the number of weddings we book a year to 10 - so that we will be able to do
our best work for our wedding clients and for our other clients.

We would like to thank Dusty Brown for his advice and encouragement and Tim and Cheryl Halberg for the never ending inspiration... you guys rock.
Thank you!

Sandi Gunnett

Thank you Tommy!!! Thank you for the inspiration.

XO

I so needed it!

Sandi

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?'

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

this exit? feelin a bit like Alice...

`Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'

`That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,' said the Cat.

`I don't much care where--' said Alice.

`Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.

`--so long as I get SOMEWHERE,' Alice added as an explanation.

`Oh, you're sure to do that,' said the Cat, `if you only walk long enough.'

the great puzzle....

Alice took up the fan and gloves, and, as the hall was very hot, she kept fanning herself all the time she went on talking: `Dear, dear! How queer everything is to-day! And yesterday things went on just as usual. I wonder if I've been changed in the night? Let me think: was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I'm not the same, the next question is, Who in the world am I? Ah, THAT'S the great puzzle!'

bright as yellow - for Alison

And you live your life with your arms stretched out.
Eye to eye when speaking.
Enter rooms with great joy shouts,
happy to be meeting.

And bright,
bright,
bright as yellow,
warm as yellow.

And I do not want to be a rose.
I do not wish to be pale pink,
but flower scarlet, flower gold.
And have no thorns to distance me,

but be bright,
bright,
bright as yellow,
warm as yellow.

Even if I'm shouting, even if I'm shouting here
inside.
Even if I'm shouting, do you see that I'm wanting,
that I want to be so
bright,
bright,
bright as yellow,
warm as yellow.

one day at a time

Notes... to myself

I am thankful for sunshine and rain
for blue skies and grey
for friends and family - past, future, and present

I am thankful for work and for downtime
as it gives me time to reflect, reorder, and rejuvenate
-life is too short -downtime is important

I am thankful for children
they challenge us, keep us moving, show us what love is,
and teach us patience and grace

I am thankful for life and all of it's challenges
and am grateful that it comes at us one day at a time

One day at a time.
I do not know the future - I try to lay my worries down
to be thankful

and the skies opened....

It is pouring outside this morning. No need for music as the drops sound their slow steady rhythm on the rooftop. A stop and take note kind of day. We move too fast and need to be reminded to slow down - to think of the past and the future.... one year ago - Today I remember.... as I watch the drops form on the barren branches outside my window - falling to the ground below in turn.... The snowdrops are just starting to bloom.

The guys.... one last time.

Kirk, Ethan, Lee, Nico, and Dylan.... off to change the world - for the better....

Home again....

His room is empty. I have yet to go into it. I miss him but am also excited for him.

The camera did not come out. I have no pictures to share - I was busy being a Mom. His apartment is very nice - OK that's an understatement - it's sweet! His roommate is great... his name is Sam! There are 4 guys in the apartment. He has promised to send some pictures.

Yes we were watching the weather from the 18th floor... it was intense. Thanks to those of you who called after the storm to see if we were ok! It is very strange to see furniture and other debris flying through the air - flung from one building to another. We didn't know there was a tornado warning but soon found out and huddled in the hallway as the wind moved the building we were in. We saw a man lying on the sidewalk below that had been hit by something flying through the air. The police were there tending to him as storm died down... waiting for the ambulance. We could not tell how badly he was hurt.

We are safe... we are home. The trip went well. Dylan is settling in and we are learning to adjust. He is happy.

Life - the next step

Each Life Converges to some Centre
Expressed - or still
Exists in every Human Nature
A Goal

Embodied scarcely to itself - it may be
Too fair
For Credibility's presumption
To mar

Adored with caution - as a Brittle Heaven

To reach
Were hopeless, as the Rainbow's Raiment
To touch

Yet persevered toward - sure - for the Distance
How high
Unto the Saints' slow diligence
The Sky

Ungained - it may be - by a Life's low Venture
But then
Eternity enable the endeavoring
Again.

a snowingly enfolding glory is

all angry common things to disappear
causing through mystery miracle peace:

or (if begin the colours of you voice)
from some complete existence of to dream
into complete some dream of to exist
a stranger who is i awakening am.

Living no single thing dares partly seem
one antomy once, and every cannot stir
imagining, while you are motionless-

whose moving is more april than the year
(if all her most first little flowers rise

out of tremendous darkness into air)

death and life

Death has touched my small corner of the universe.
Death in all of its horror and splendor.
She is free now... free from pain and suffering.

She taught me more than she will ever know.

thank you willeke

Hey girl -

Life
wonderful
acute
trying to grasp it
but who would?

Life
challenging
unreal

trying to enjoy it
but hard to feel

Life
comes and goes

in waves
trying to love it
all of it's shapes

Just thought of this, as I thought of you (after seeing your latest
update)

Love ya

Willeke

LIFE.....

I have been busy. -Work (just completed a couple of big projects and am feeling relieved but need to tackle the next ones waiting in the wings. -Sick husband (flu-real flu-fever, chills, aches all over, basically he feels like he wants to die), those of you that know me know that I have been sterilizing everything in the house so that no one else gets the flu (cleaning the clean)!! new chores also include shoveling, taking out the garbage and recycling... all the fun guy stuff. ;P -Kids (one hoping to go to college next year -the other addicted to guitar-has to play constantly) need to be kept on track. Did I mention how lucky I am to have such great kids? -they are really great! Family -my Aunt (Aunt Judy) is dying -too young (she is in the hospital up the street at the moment) -they gave her blood and are trying to control edema - and it's her husbands (Uncle Bobs) birthday today! -Life has been taking up my time. Not that any of these things take up all of my time... but they each take a little. Also -my camera had to be sent in for repairs, again! Wojtek had surgery on his eye yesterday so I am using his camera while he is healing. I can't thank him enough. Had impromptu lunch with Rick and Brenda and part of their family (Rain, Grace, Dove, and a friend) yesterday... Thanks! it was great to smile, laugh, and catch up. In conclusion, Life though at times challenging is good -I have been shooting but not posting... have another shoot this weekend -they called last night! I will get back to blogging again soon. I promise! Spring is going to come... right??? ; ) OK I am finished rambling.... Thanks for checking in. Would love to hear how you are doing.
